Visual Rhetoric Analysis: Introduction

You are sitting on a lonesome golf field, 9-iron in hand, staring at the flag flapping in the wind, lining up the shot that can potentially win you your game, there is no room for error. As you come down hard from your backswing, you feel as if something has gone awry. Your shot flies in an awkward arc only to land in the nearest sand bunker. You drop your shoulders in anguish and scuffle off in shame. This has happened to everyone at some point in their expansive lives, whether it is in golf or anything else, the feeling of defeat. Advertisement companies love to draw on this fear, the fear that you are not as good as you should be, and attempt to convince you that their product or products will give you the winning edge or help you compete at a high level. None do this better than Nike, and in the contained ad, Nike uses the image of Tiger Woods and one bold sentence to try and convince you that their product has the power to elevate your game.
